Before founding Qase, Dan Zollmann spent several years working in legal operations and practice management consulting in Toronto. Part of that work brought him inside a mid-size Ontario lawyer referral service in 2021. He spent several months there — sitting with intake coordinators, watching how referrals were processed, and understanding how forwarding fees were tracked.
What he found was a systematic gap. The referral service operated under law society oversight with real compliance obligations — eligibility criteria, forwarding fee rules, quarterly reporting requirements. But the tools it used were a phone, a shared spreadsheet, and email. Intake notes were on paper. Fee tracking was a separate spreadsheet with no connection to the referral record. The quarterly law society report took two days to produce and was rebuilt from scratch each time.
The problem was not effort or competence — it was that no one had built the right software for this specific workflow. Existing legal practice management tools were built for law firms, not referral services. Generic SaaS tools lacked the compliance scaffolding these organisations needed. The niche was too specific for general-purpose software, and too small for large vendors to prioritise.
Dan founded Qase in Toronto in 2023 to fill that gap. Forwarding fee compliance, law society reporting, intake audit trails, and panel management were the first requirements — not features added after the fact. The platform is bootstrapped and direct: Dan answers every demo request personally.
